诗体名。全篇每句四字或以四字句为主。是我国古代诗歌中最早形成的体式。先 秦 诗歌，如《诗经》，大都为四言。后来的作者，格调稍变。自 南朝 宋 齐 以后，作者渐少。参阅 清 赵翼 《陔馀丛考·四言诗》。
